Telescoping grocery hook and slide that extends past a pickup bed sidewall

This is a pair of nested slide rails mounted longitudinally inside a pickup-box sidewall with an inner rail that telescopes out past the bed edge so a person standing at the tailgate can reach it. The inner rail carries at least one hook for hanging grocery bags and has a bumper and a handle to move it between stowed and extended positions. Ford marketed this as an in-bed, easily reachable storage/hanging feature for smaller, fragile items.

(57) What the patent covered

The independent claim requires an outer (first) slide member fixed along a pickup-box sidewall and an inner (second) slide member that telescopes within it and is sized to extend beyond both ends of the outer member; the outer member must be mounted so that when extended at least part of the inner member projects outside the pickup box. The claim also contemplates the inner member carrying hooks and having a bumper and handle in the specification.

The distinctive part: Putting a telescoping drawer-like slide inboard on a pickup sidewall with the inner rail designed specifically to extend outside the box for reachability and hang hooks for grocery bags.

Novelty 3/5. Telescoping drawer slides and in-bed toolboxes were already common; this was a clever adaptation to let the inner slide protrude past the bed edge and carry bag hooks for easier access.

Making it

extrude or stamp slide rails and brackets, stamp hooks, mold or cut bumpers, powder-coat/plate metal parts, and assemble by riveting or fasteners; fitted into vehicle bed during vehicle assembly or retrofit with bolt-on brackets

Materials: stamped or extruded steel slide rails, steel or plated stamped hooks, plastic or rubber bumper, powder-coated steel or aluminum mounting brackets

Manufacturability 4/5. Several metal parts and simple plastic bumper, typical supplier tooling for slides and brackets; assembly is straightforward but requires accurate alignment and fasteners to bed sidewall.

Is anyone buying?

Comparable products are on sale; this exact design wasn't found. Multiple sellers offer in-bed sliding trays with tailgate reach (including Ford/BedSlide options and universal cargo catch systems); at least one listing shows 56" of extension past the tailgate and common category presence across major aftermarket retailers.

Before you make it

We didn't find any related continuation or divisional patents still in force, although that doesn't rule out design patents, trademarks or unrelated patents covering the same product.

Practical issues include water/dirt ingress and corrosion of slides, ensuring load limits for hooks, and competing aftermarket cargo-organizer options; patent has lapsed so no licensing concern noted (not legal advice).

Owners occasionally revive lapsed patents (about 1.5% are), and this page is a research lead rather than legal advice, so get a freedom-to-operate opinion before you manufacture anything.

Claim 1, as granted

1. A storage device for storing items in a pick-up box, comprising: an outer slide member longitudinally mounted to a sidewall of said pick-up box, said outer slide member having first and second ends; and an inner slide member operably disposed for telescopic movement between a stowed and an extended position along said outer slide member, said inner slide member extending beyond said first and second ends of said slide member; wherein said outer slide member is positioned such that at least a portion of said inner slide member extends outside of said pick-up box in the extended position.
